Academy Structure

The Academy is composed of several permanent bodies: the Board of Governors, the Board of Trustees, Standing Award Committees and the Academy Members. According to the needs of the Academy’s mission and activities, and under the supervision of the Board of Governors, these bodies may create Standing Committees in charge of developing specific activities whose outcomes could include dissemination of opinion papers and white papers on specific innovation related subjects.

Board of Governors

The governing body of the Academy liaises with the EAI to ensure its procedural, strategic development and mission fulfilment. In particular, the BoG monitors and oversees membership size and representation to ensure it properly embodies the multi-faceted community it represents.

  • The BoG is also responsible for defining the Academy standards and for approving annual recommendations submitted by the Board of Trustees.
  • The Board of Governors consists of:
    • the President of EAI, who serves as its Chair;
    • a member representing the European Institutions at large.
    • andthe Academy’s Senior Advisor on Internationalisation Issues.
  • The Board of Governors meets regularly to review the progress and alignment of Academy projects and other activities.
  • The Board of Governors approves the Chair of the Board of Trustees upon the nomination by the EAI President.
  • The Board of Governors has the authority to introduce any required changes in relation to key Academy Awards.

Board of Trustees

The Board of Trustees is made up of distinguished individuals of the Innovation Academy. The Academy Board of Trustees is entrusted with the responsibility for overseeing the recognition of achievement in innovation through the granting of Innovation Academy Awards, overseeing the Fellowship Program and Academy Membership.

  • The Chair and the Members of the Board of Trustees are nominated by the EAI President and approved by the Board of Governors.
  • The Members of the Board of Trustees are nominated for three-year terms.
  • The Board of Trustees establishes relevant Award Committees, rules and processes, and works with the EAI community and Members’ Societies.
  • The Board of Trustees liaises with the EAI to identify potential areas for mutually beneficial collaboration.
  • The Board of Trustees is responsible for approving any proposals for new Academy Awards in addition to the initial Awards (see below), as well as securing appropriate sponsorships for its events and awards.

Academy Members

Academy Members represent internationally renowned thought leaders and experts who have made fundamental contributions in promoting research and science as conduit for innovation. Membership to the Academy represents one of the highest levels of recognition for distinguished individuals that have demonstrated leadership and achievement in the area of innovation and society. Members of the Academy include leading minds in Europe and elsewhere in the fields of innovation, ICT and society.

The Members of the Academy develop, implement and promote Academy’s strategic agenda according to the guidelines of the Board of Trustees and the advice of the Board of Governors. The Members of the Academy will be responsible for the implementation of the Academy activities and the development of the Academy Awards Program, following the guidelines provided by the Board of Trustees and with the advice of the Board of Governors. In order to facilitate its efficient functioning, Academy Members may create Standing Committees (e.g., the International Relations Committee composed by those members dedicated to the internationalisation of the Academy’s’ outputs and results). Moreover, Academy Members shall have the opportunity to identify crucial contents and inputs, and to disseminate them through white papers published by the Academy

  • New Academy Members are elected annually in recognition of their distinguished achievements in making contributions to science, research, governance and business that lead to Innovation.
  • Innovation Academy membership is based solely on achievement.
  • New Academy Members join as either European or International Members.
  • The following categories will join the Academy as European Members: nationals of an EU Member State or Associated country, or otherwise candidates who are based in an EU Member State or Associated country;
  • All other nominees will join the Academy as International Members;
  • Nomination of new Academy Members must be submitted by an existing Member.
  • The nomination and evaluation process is confidential and is managed by the Academy Membership Committee. It is then approved by the Board of Trustees.
  • New Academy Members are announced annually at the EAI Strategic Forum Leadership meeting.

Standing Award Committees

Standing Academy Award (SAA) Committees organise calls for nominations, evaluate these nominations, rank them and select winners in respective Award Categories.

  • SIB Vice-Chairs will serve as SAA Committee Chairs for the respective Award and for corresponding thematic Summit. After an open call-for-nominations set up and run by the SIB&Summit Committee, SIB Vice Chairs will bestow final approval on the appointed nominees, who will be presented with the related Academy Awards (listed in the table below)
  • SAA Committee Members are appointed out of existing EAI participants by respective SIB Vice-Chairs.
  • Academy Awards are presented to winners during annual thematic Summits.
