Tom Holmgaard Børsen

Associate Professor, Aalborg University Copenhagen

Research and teaching interests:

I study technological expert-cultures. My studies focus on disagreement among technical and scientific experts with the overall intention of portraying, rather than resolving, the controversies, and I have worked out analyses of post-normal problems such as nanotechnology, lifestyle drugs, climate change, patenting, food safety etc.

Another part of my research activities focus on the design, implementation and evaluation of trans-disciplinary university seminars, courses, modules, study programmes etc. (undergraduate, graduate, and Ph.D. level, as well as continuing education). The overall purpose of these initiatives is to cultivate social responsibility and disciplinary imagination among the students and course participants. I have set up/defined a core theoretical concept: “Expert Bildung”. This pedagogical ideal has systematically been implemented in a number of seminars, courses, modules, study programmesthat I have developed and many times also taught.

Finally I am developing tools that knowledge intensive organisations can use to a/ internalise ethical principles in their organisational cultures, and b/ communicate their ethicalendeavoursto external stakeholders.

At Aalborg University I manage a Research unit on Techno-Anthropology. I am a member of two research groups: Science and Mathematics Education Research Group (SMERG) and Research Team for University Teaching and Learning, and one research center: Centre for Applied Ethics and Philosophy of Science.
