Training School ‘Next Generation Sequencing analysis methods for life sciences’

Developments in Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) technology have revolutionised research in life sciences. NGS technologies have delivered unprecedented opportunities to study and understand fundamental life processes for the benefit of humankind. The cost and time required to generate sequence data have dropped dramatically, whereas the amount of produced data increased exponentially. This demands new approaches to handle these enormous volumes of data. The rapid pace of the technology development in NGS is the driving force of a dedicated Training School that will address the needs of young researchers in the field of bioinformatics.

Participating ESRs will have the opportunity to acquire the most recently available information in the area of Next Generation Sequencing technologies and data analysis. The program of the Training School is marked by specialists in the area of NGS data handling and analysis through lectures and hands-on practical exercises with real data from sequencing projects.

This four-day programme is structured in sections to cover the fields of:

  • Data Storage & Management
  • Sequence Assembly
  • NGS Data Analysis
  • Sequence Annotation’

The aims and objectives of this Training School are:

  • Training ESRs in the field of NGS data analysis, by providing an up to date hands-on training using the facilities of UPPMAX/UPPNEX
  • Facilitating interaction of ESRs with both experts and trainers in the field of bioinformatics
  • Establishing and strengthening the network among members of the three COST Actions involved

The Training School will be followed by a workshop organised by COST Action BM1006: “Next generation sequencing, what’s next?”.
